FOTD: The medic with four eyes

When I entered med school, a lot of my classmates were wearing eyeglasses all the time, and I hoped and prayed that I would not share the same fate as I don't really like to look geeky 24/7. What I loathe to happen most is that I would get too dependent on them like my sister is - she could not even navigate inside the house without her glasses/contact lenses on.

Now I'm on my 3rd year of wearing prescription glasses. It was okay for me, as I only wear them when I have to see something from a distance, like projected Powerpoint presentations and then I take it off as soon as the lecture's done. But these past 2 weeks, I was having a hard time to see once I take my glasses off, and I'm also having a hard time seeing from afar even when I was wearing them, so I went to an optical shop last Saturday to have my eyes checked and get a new pair of specs.

The bad news now is, I now have an increased dependence to my eyeglasses. Not as bad as my sister's, but dependence still the same. So now I have to adjust my makeup routine accordingly.

Find out why (and see my FOTD) after the jump!

The pic above was taken after I wore my glasses for 2 hours. My eyes look smaller, isn't it? To me, it even looked like I'm squinting. That's my problem when wearing prescription glasses. It's not just me, I notice it with my 24/7 four-eyed friends all the time! I like my eyes, and making them smaller just because I need to wear glasses makes me sad. And now that I feel I'm getting closer to becoming a 24/7 eyeglass wearer, I turn to makeup to solve the problem.

The pic below is how I look like before wearing my specs. Worn without glasses, the eye makeup is a bit darker than what I would normally wear on a school day. It's actually almost the same as my previous FOTD, but I used a darker taupe eyeshadow as a base to achieve more contrast against my shimmery champagne highlight shade. And I went a bit heavy on lining the eyes. Anyway the previous FOTD post wasn't that detailed as this so here's how I did it:

Eyes

The key to doing the eye makeup is to make the eyes look larger and define them.

  1. I took a matte taupe eyeshadow and placed it in the inner and outer thirds of the lid. I normally use this color to define the crease (hence it is darker than what I would normally use as the base color), but using it as the lid base helps in making your eye more defined beneath the glasses.
  2. I used a sparkly cream eyeshadow here, but I only placed it on the most protruding part of the lid -the middle 1/3 - to give dimension.
  3. Curl your lashes. Very important step. I have long, straight lashes so mine always hits the glasses whenever I have it on, and it is quite irritating. It makes your peepers look perky too!
  4. Tightline. As in line the roots of your lashes of the upper lashline and its waterline too if you wish, using a black eyeliner.
  5. Using the same black eyeliner, extended the upper lashline and ended it with a slight wing. I also lined the outer 1/3 of the lower lashline and connected it with the winged end of the upper lashline.
  6. To make the eyeliner last, I applied dark brown eyeshadow over the black eyeliner lines.
  7. Apply mascara to hold the lashes' curl.
  8. Using a concealer pencil, I drew on the waterline of the inner 2/3 of the lower lashline.
  9. DEFINE YOUR BROWS. To guide you in this, you may want to read on this post and this post from last month's "All About Brows" series.

Cheeks

I used a peach-colored blush on the apples of my cheeks for a light flush. I went easy with the cheek color, letting my frames get all the attention.

Lips

I used my everyday peachy pink lipstick.

So this is how I look when I have my glasses on. Having photos taken while wearing this is such a pain because the light keeps hitting on the eyeglasses! Whew.

Eye looks bigger thanks to the eyeliner.

Eye makeup doesn't look that dark now with the glasses on.

Not so geeky anymore, eh?

And that is that! Of course you can try this whether or not you wear your glasses. Just remember to define your brows and line your eyes if you're bothered with your eyes getting lost underneath your frames. Other than those things, I'd like to know more on how to adapt with my newfound impairment. Any more makeup tips? Hahaha.

Stay girly!
